Dry winters could herald return of the Long Drought – The Times Jan 9, 2007
‘Researchers suggest that the weather patterns that caused long periods of drought in the early 20th century could return. The two dry winters of 2004 and 2005 could be an indication that cyclical patterns controlling rain may cause a return to a dryer period, as the last 50 years have been wetter than normal. Historical weather data from the 19th and early 20th centuries indicate that dryer weather was common in Britain.
Last summer, which saw many temperature records being broken, is in line with climate change predictions. Rainfall is down by 10% over last century and winter 2004-05 was one of the driest in over 100 years.’
